If We Be Friends (in development)

When best friends Nik and Ashlea create an underground zine called The Speaks, it unexpectedly becomes the hottest “hard-copy, hold-it-in-your-hand, made-from-paper-that-comes-from-trees, words-on-a-page anything” many of their high school peers have read in a long time. A year later, the anonymous zine is still thriving. Everything behind the scenes appears to be running smoothly.

That is, until the pair are assigned a scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream for their English class. Forced into a freaky forest full of fairies, lovers and others, Nik’s world is shaken, while Ashlea is starting to build a new world for herself beyond their co-dependent bond. These shifts shine a spotlight on unspoken tensions, forcing them to confront how they’ve grown and what happens if they’re actually growing apart...

Between countercultural zine-making, queer teen friendship, the fight against the “parental rights” movement and too much Shakespeare, this play tells the story of two teens navigating the beautifully messy, sometimes terrifying, and constantly evolving journey that is gender.
